Searching for Fire

He lifted his hat, how-do-you-do,
blew a kiss,
dropped a honeyed sweet heart.
And that far-flung darling lilted through the light
and the gloom
with all her gilded glamours,
and all her heartstrings of silver,
searching for fire.
He blew his hurricane,
and gave her captivating sorrows,
words that caught flame and
burned lost in laughter
for ever and again.
He, the devil that may care…
She, a sudden familiar abandon…
Both building fires across the night.
Over the winds that blew
when they knew nothing else,
so wild and
happy and
sad.
